The Role

We are looking for a Development Engineer with a nanofabrication background to join the Hard Mastering team within the Waveguide Development department to deliver the next generation of AR technology.

You will

  • Research in an industrial environment, applying your knowledge to real engineering challenges of creating hard masters for our nanoimprint production of diffractive waveguides.  
  • Work with various fabrication, nano-characterization, and failure analysis activities as well as coordinating with external partners.
  • Research and develop new design solutions and novel fabrication approaches 
  • Work closely with internal and external teams to deliver solutions to processes or products 
  • Develop new measurement and data analysis protocols to help with resolving discrepancies between desired and actual structures.
  • Help transition technologies through various readiness levels.

What we would like to see

  • PhD in Electronics, Physics, Materials, Nanotechnology, or Photonics.
  • Background and hands-on experience with:
    • Nanofabrication: E-beam/ DUV or other advanced lithography, dry and wet etching, deposition techniques (magnetron sputtering, ion assisted deposition, e-beam evaporation, atomic layer deposition, etc).
    • Metrology and characterisation: SEM, AFM, Profilometry etc.
    • Numerical analysis and data visualization: MATLAB, Scientific Python, JMP, etc.
  • Strong verbal / written communication and reasoning skills.
  • Great problem solving skills with an ability to work to short timelines and challenging deliverables. 


  • Knowledge of White Light Interferometry, Ellipsometry, FTIR, and polymers used in nanofabrication.
  • Experience with optical measurements of diffractive structures, optical metamaterials, or similar nanostructures.
  • Experience of electromagnetic (FDTD, RCWA, FEM, optical ray-tracers etc.) and diffractive optics modelling.
