The Role:

As a Characterisation engineer you will be working alongside multi-disciplinary research and development teams to deliver measurement capabilities in order to determine key performance characteristics of the next generation of AR devices.  You will work within the team designing and developing optical measurement solutions to characterise diffractive waveguides, projectors and assembled headsets.

This is an opportunity to work with a high calibre Characterisation team in our state-of-the-art facilities in Abingdon, Oxfordshire

You will: 

  • Define requirements, design and commission new measurement systems aimed to characterise our waveguide, projectors and headset products for operation in both our R&D and production environments
  • Perform In depth analysis of optical measurement systems and obtained data
  • Select commercial off the shelf  components and instrumentation that are required for test implementation and develop requirements for custom optical and electrical components as required.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers of external measurement equipment
  • Calibrate optical measurement systems for radiometric/photometric response, focus and distortion
  • Be a part of various R&D and NPI activities working closely with multiple technical teams to deliver measurement solutions.
  • Utilise technical knowledge to inform commercial decisions that impact product and team
  • Review and interpret characterisation results, and communicate findings across the development teams
  • Keep updated on research activities internally & externally to empower you to develop innovative products to the AR market
  • Work with the team to support and maintain test equipment in the UK and across partner sites globally

We would like to see:

  • PhD in a relevant subject, OR degree level with experience in R&D or industry
  • Experience in display or optical measurement systems
  • Understanding of diffractive and imaging optics
  • Understanding of advanced image processing and analysis techniques
  • Strong hands-on experience with lab work, optical setup, building and aligning metrology equipment
  • Experience of instrumentation control via software interfaces
  • Competence in a programming language (Python/Matlab/C/LabView)
  • Experience with CAD software packages
  • Experience with optical lab equipment and light sources
  • Familiarity with various optical metrology techniques i.e. interferometry
  • Highly analytical with experience disseminating knowledge internally and externally
  • You will be working in a fast-paced environment so it’s essential that you can prioritise your workload 


  • Direct experience in Augmented Reality Displays
  • Experience with diffractive optics
  • Experience with polarisation optics
  • Experience with colorimetry and science of human vision and perception
